Our Premier Album of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Claims the Number One Spot.

Initially, this album might appear closer to a difficult academic challenge rather than the latest popular music album from a musician whose previous hit featured an international K-pop star. Broken into four different sections and sung in thirteen languages, we have a breathtaking orchestral-influenced work that delves into female mystery, religious transcendence, and corporal transformation, frequently through the perspective of different saintly figures. The dissolution of a relationship—a theme handled with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—soars skyward on this record, buoyed by the lush sound of a major orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning composer among an extensive roll call of contributors. The pure audacity by itself renders the work of other artists look quite laughable.

Transcending Academic Exercise

The fact that Lux manages to transcend dry intellectual chin-stroking is nearly miraculous, with complete praise belonging to Rosalía. Although this is not her first album to alchemize the past and the present, its stakes feel much higher on Lux, and the tightrope walk more pronounced. What truly elevates her fourth release, beyond its complex tunes, dense compositions, and inherent drama, is an essential sense of playfulness. Much like the iconic Björk during her height, you find a captivating sense to Rosalía's voice which sweeps you into its tornado. When she is tearing your heart in two, the listener still desire to stay alongside her through the ride.

A Prime Example of Joy

This playful spirit shines clearly during a stunning Italian ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy for more than four minutes. Suddenly, everything drops away, and there's a spontaneous laugh and a comment prior to a hilariously exaggerated orchestral crescendo thuds down like comedic force. The song then shifts to the frenetic track driven by racing orchestration, a powerful choir, and a cameo appearance from the artist herself.

"The magic of Lux lies in you rarely exactly understand—nor wish to predict—what it is going to next."

Almost each song finishes in a totally different point than where it started. One moment examines the transient trappings of fame with a featherlight orchestration before disintegrating in electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut echoing the artist's previous rhythmic work starts out dark and brooding, with prowling vocals, until sudden traditional rhythms and an angelic choir enter to smooth the song's jagged corners.

The Balance Of Art & Accessibility

A key achievement on the album is navigating the line of bold innovation and broad appeal. This is little coincidence that the album has become the artist's first work to crack the Top 5 of major charts: its heart contains a suite of utterly catchy hits. One track sung entirely in English builds around a chorus that seems to collect increasingly infectious melodies while it spins skyward. This trick is repeated on a different expansive ballad that grows and constricts, weaving multiple melodies like an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song seduces with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares with cultural impact of other breakup anthems, eviscerating an ex- partner described as an "psychological bully".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals have a painted-on edge, like a fairy-tale character hiding a blade: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You've won the trophy of disappointment."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

This album is pop on a grand scale, a hungry grasp for capital-A artistry in an era of looming artificial sameness. It eschews solipsism in favor of glorious elevation, creating a dramatic spectacle that skillfully manages its own built-in ridiculousness. It is a deep well of buried gems that requires patience to fully mine but doesn't seem like a chore. While other big pop albums of 2025 seemed like feasting on meal, this record offers a sumptuous banquet at which the characters around it, perhaps intoxicated on sacred drink, flit from discussions about ancient saints, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and shared gossip about hopeless men. In essence, it's a modern-day musical from music's most endlessly creative practitioner.
