Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a prominent honors show approaches, you'll find a clamor to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
